Research methods in schizophrenia

William Honer

Abstract

This talk will cover the challenges and opportunities for clinical research in schizophrenia. The roots of curiosity-driven and clinically focussed research strategies will be discussed briefly. A “just the facts†perspective concerning schizophrenia will be presented. The implications of the following six facts for clinical trials will be considered. 1) Schizophrenia is a complex disorder. 2) Schizophrenia affects multiple neurotransmitter systems. 3) The defining features of illness are poorly linked to treatment response. 4) Schizophrenia is often highly disabling. 5) General care for schizophrenia is often poor. 6) There are large gaps between clinical trials, clinical guidelines and clinical practice.
